Types of sleep disorders

Sleep apnea

Sleep apnea is a condition that causes someone’s breathing to pause during sleep. It prevents the body from taking enough oxygen, causing you to wake up in the night. Here are two types of sleep apnea:

  • Central sleep apnea: happens when the connection between the brain and the muscles that control your breath fails to work accordingly.
  • Obstructive sleep apnea: This happens when the air space is obstructed and becomes narrow.

Sleep apnea is a severe condition besides causing sleeplessness.

Insomnia

Insomnia is being unable to sleep or to maintain sleep. Stress, anxiety, digestive problems, or hormones are among the leading causes of insomnia.

On the other hand, the condition could also be a sign of another underlying health condition. The effects of this condition include irritability, depression, weight gain, and underperformance.

Older adults and women are the most affected people by insomnia. Here are classifications of insomnia:

  • Transient: This one lasts for some nights at times
  • Chronic: happens daily and can go on for a month
  • Periodic: Occurs once in a while

Narcolepsy

Narcolepsy is a sleep attack that takes place when you are awake. It is an interesting condition because you feel tired all of a sudden and fall asleep immediately. This condition can cause sleep paralysis, and you might not move after waking up.

In most cases, narcolepsy occurs independently, but in others, it is caused by some disorder in the neurological system.

Causes of sleep disorder

Several factors cause sleep disorders, and most of them are due to underlying issues. Here are some of them.

Nocturia

This is also known as frequent urination, and it might lead to sleeplessness. It is characterized by frequently waking up to go to ease yourself. Nocturia can be caused by problems of the urinary tract or hormonal imbalances. It is therefore wise to see a doctor for further advice.

Stress and anxiety

Stress is one of the biggest causes of sleep disorders in the world. Many people are battling different issues of life, and it is taking away their strength. This, for most people, stress has resulted in changes in sleeping patterns, difficulty in falling asleep, and insomnia. It would help if you found the solution to the cause of your anxiety.

Chronic pain

People suffering from chronic pain have a difficult time when it comes to sleep. The pain keeps on waking you up now and then. Back pain, arthritis, fibromyalgia, and migraines are the leading causes of sleeplessness. This is more so for older people.

Restless leg syndrome

Restless leg syndrome is an irresistible need to move your leg. It can occur anytime, but to most people, it is during the night. The disease is linked to health conditions like Parkinson’s disease. Most of its victims can have any of the above-discussed sleeping disorders.

Conclusion

Sleep disorders have had a tremendous negative impact on many people. This is more so if someone doesn’t know the cause. Most of the causes are physical and can be avoided while others require medical assistance.

Lack of enough sleep can cause mood swings, lack of concentration and also affect your general health. However, there are two main ways of treating sleep disorders: lifestyle changes and medical treatment.

Lifestyle changes involve avoiding stress and anxiety and also drinking a lot of water. On the other hand, you should avoid taking caffeine at night since it affects sleep.

Your body needs enough sleep so that it may get more energy to continue working. Lack of sleep means that you will not be able to run your daily errands efficiently.
